3D HoofCare

3D HoofCare is dedicated to both improving the quality of equine hooves and helping the equine athlete maximize it's performance.

Using the horses natural bare foot as our reference point, 3D HoofCare is constantly looking at ways to maintain a healthy hoof using the very best trimming protocols, in unison with modern materials and techniques, innovated hoof pads and traditional horseshoes.

3D HoofCare has a range of products which can help both hoof care professionals around the world and the amazing horses they work on.

The speed and effectiveness of this discovery allows for designs to always be improved upon. With the use of bespoke pads for specific horses, there aren't many other solutions available in the market that meet the requirements of our clientele.

HoofCast

HoofCast is a product that is used to efficiently protect and aid a compromised foot. The product consists of a lightweight fiberglass cloth that when impregnated with water, activates a resin that will make it into a strong reinforcement for a hoof that has been compromised due to excess shoeing.

A regular horseshoe can be nailed onto this reinforced wall repeatedly without affecting the compromised hoof wall. It also used as a protection and reinforcement for thin walled horses to transition to barefoot effectively.

Derek Poupard is the inventor of 3D HoofCare and HoofCast. He started his career as a farrier in South Africa. Derek travelled the world having the opportunity to work in the USA, Dubai and United Kingdom on the highest profile horses in the world.

Derek spent most of his career ambitiously trying to improve the quality of a horse's hoof, his latest efforts have shown positive results in a very short time frame.

Through the use of incorporating the latest technologies such as 3D printing to create the HoofCare product, as well as developing this product alongside his own HoofCast product, the goal was to emulate the horse hoof in its natural state of being barefoot.

With the use of his products, horses around the world are able to reach their full potential in a way that's never been seen before.

Blurton Barshoe Matchplay

Blurton Barshoe Matchplay

Blurton Barshoe Matchplay is the most educational competition in the world. Jim is proud to team up with World Championship Blacksmiths

World Championship Blacksmiths

The WCB (World Championship Blacksmiths) was formed in the spring of 2006 as a membership based organization. It was born from an idea that company CEO, Craig Trnka had been kicking around for years. It began with a small core of people who brainstormed and gathered information then pulled the trigger with the WCB officially launching on June 19, 2006.

The WCB founders wanted to produce horseshoeing competitions at venues where there was horse owning public to show and educate that a well educated farrier is a powerful tool. He is the only equine professional who sees the horse on a six week rotation in a non crisis situation.

First Super Clinic

The first ever and original Super Clinic took place in a covered arena in Houston Texas in January of 2007. Over 200 farriers from across the country gathered to take part in this first ever of its kind event. The first competition of the first season took place in April of 2007. The venue was Harrah’s Louisiana Downs Racetrack and Casino in Bossier City, Louisiana.

The idea of horseshoeing competitors being able to arrive at a destination with just their toolbox was a completely new concept. All of the equipment was there for them; the anvil, forge, vice and all the little pieces that competitors used to have to haul in the back of a pickup truck if they were going to go to any other horseshoeing competition. With the go round format the WCB instilled a much greater amount of education being taken away from each event. With go rounds competitors compete once, then can observe their peers and learn from them. There was a lot to learn and wrinkles to iron out but the WCB was on its way.

The 2007 season included stops in Durango, Colorado in June, the Western Montana Fair in Dillon Montana in August, Equine Affaire in West Springfield, MA in November, Athens Georgia in January of 2008 and the season ended at the Florida State Fair in Tampa Florida at the end of January of 2008. Mr. Bill Poor of Midland Texas was the first WCB National Champion.

Within the WCB the passion is strong, education through competition.

Blurton Farrier Tools in Ethiopia

Blurton Farrier Tools in Ethiopia

Blurton Farrier Tools in Ethiopia

Seven Ethiopian farriers that are being trained through the Brooke Global Farrier Project have each received a Jim Blurton buffer that was purchased at Farrier Focus from the Farriers Foundation. Currently horses in Ethiopia are shod in rubber shoes made from old tyres and nailed on with carpentry nails. With the training from Brooke Global Farrier Project they have learnt to make tongs, stamps and pritchels. With these skills in hand they are making shoes which they are now learning how to apply correctly.

Brooke Global Farrier Project

Brooke began working in Ethiopia back in 2006. At that time they were operational in only four districts in Southern regional state. Currently the organization is operating in 13 different districts across three regions (Oromia, Amhara, and Southern Regional state). They have intervention areas in 27 districts, and there are also another 16 new intervention areas planned.

Equines are more than just a domestic animal in Ethiopia - their existence in the community is helpful in so many ways. There are about one million cart donkeys and 250,000 cart horses working all day long. On average, one donkey serves up to three families at a time. These equines work in harsh conditions and there are many welfare issues that need to be addressed with Brooke’s intervention.

Blurton Farrier tools in Ethiopia helping Brooke Global farrier Project

The goal is to improve the welfare of 446,681 working equines in Ethiopia, including those most hard-to-reach

  • working with equine owners, users and handlers to improve their welfare practices and the livelihood of equine owners
  • working with local animal health practitioners, including vets, farriers, cart-makers and saddlers to ensure good quality services are available for working animals
  • supporting the improvement of equine facilities such as shelters, water points and service centres
  • working to increase the access communities have to equine medicines through the Drug and Vaccine Revolving Fund (DVRF) initiative
  • raising the profile of equine welfare in government policy and legal frameworks

Jonathan Nunn Nailing on Hammer

Jonathan Nunn Nailing on hammer is available in three versions. The long head, compact and short head, designed by expert farrier Jonathan Nunn. Based in Staffordshire, Jonathan Nunn has been sharing his knowledge of innovative tool designs and creations with many others in the industry. He has hosted many hammer and toolmaking tutorials and clinics.

Jim Blurton Farrier Tools has developed a tool design concept created by Nunn – combining the highest quality manufacturing and finishing processes to create a commercially available product, which maintains its integrity and quality.

Long Head Nailing on Hammer - Product Information

The long head hammer has an angled head and long striking face which provides a precise accurate strike to the nail head, requiring minimal force and effort from the user. This means more direct force and less prolonged concussive force is transferred to the foot. This approves the experience for the horses with reduced banging on their feet during the shoeing process.

Short Head Nailing on Hammer - Product Information

The short head hammer has an angled head and long striking face which provides a precise accurate strike to the nail head, requiring minimal force and effort from the user. This means more direct force and less prolonged concussive force is transferred to the foot. This approves the experience for the horses with reduced banging on their feet during the shoeing process.

The accurate claw wrings off nail ends cleanly and smoothly and is designed to be able to pull driven nails from the shoe also.

The Jonathan Nunn nailing on hammers are manufactured from high-quality tool steel with unique features including along nose hammer which delivers precise point of force hammer blow when driving the nail, an angled head to increase velocity of the striking arc. The precisely engineered claw also cuts through the nail shank smoothly.

Read on to find out more about the Jim Blurton Sports Straight Bar horseshoe.

Product Information

Designed for the sport horse with a wide section, the Jim Blurton sport straight bar horseshoe incorporates a rolled toe which extends as far as the toe quarter, reducing the strain on the coffin joint during break over. The bar follows the shape of the heels reducing the chance of pulled shoes. The shoe incorporates a roll toe and is safed off at the heel.

This shoe offers support to the heel and frog spreading the weight evenly throughout the foot. This shoe has a bar that runs directly between the two heels, enlarging the ground-bearing surface at the back of the foot. The shoe is ideal for competition horses, as the bar does not protrude excessively at the back of the foot, whilst offering enlarged ground-bearing surface.

The Jim Blurton shoes are unique as they incorporate pitched nail holes, providing a different angle for each nail making it easier to nail on. The horseshoes are available with side or toe clips and they have a countersunk position for stud holes. The straight bar shoe is available in multiple sizes (section size increases with size of shoe).

Product Information

The lateral extension hind horseshoe is used for many different things:

  • Very useful for horses that ‘brush’ as its works by widening the horse’s gait during locomotion.
  • Can also be used as a support shoe and in the treatment of bone spavin.

Jim Blurton has made sure that the farrier can easily fit these and have confidence in their stability.

  • Deeper fullering on the outside branch of the shoe maintains a good strong nailing.
  • The shoe has no welds, ensuring there are no weak points in the shoe.
  • The shoe incorporates a roll toe and is safed off at the heel.
  • Side clips are standard and they have counter sunk stud hole islands.
  • Unique to these shoes they incorporate pitched nail holes providing a different angle for each nail making it easier to nail on.

Featured product - Jonathan Nunn Forging Hammer

This week's featured product is the Jonathan Nunn Forging Hammer

Jim Blurton Farrier Tools has developed a tool design concept created by Jonathan Nunn. It combines the highest quality manufacturing and finishing processes. This creates a commercially available product which maintains its integrity and quality.

Based in Staffordshire, Jonathan Nunn has been sharing his knowledge of innovative tool designs and creations with many others in the industry through hosting hammer and tool making tutorials and clinics.

 Read on to find out more about the Jonathan Nunn Forging Hammer (available in 2lb and 2.3lb sizes).

Product Information - Jonathan Nunn Forging Hammer

The Jonathan Nunn forging hammer design concept came about from Jonathan’s own need to make a versatile hammer which puts energy into the hammer strike. The flat face weight improves the direct hit of the hammer blow and gives a more controlled and predictable hammer blow. The chosen material H13 is a hard yet lively tool steel which gives bounce back rather than a dead hit thus reducing effort and strain on the user.

Jon Nunn forging hammers benefit from:

High quality H13 heat treated tool steel;
Flat face weighted for greater striking control and accuracy;
Large strong eye which has waist to allow the shaft to remain tighter;
Compact design, with less wobble during use;
Face diameter is the perfect size for drawing and flattening steel;
Height and length of the flat face gives wear longevity;
The head length allows the user to drop your hand when clipping;
Large mass of material around the eye gives strength to the centre of the hammer.

Where can you buy the Jonathan Nunn Forging Hammer

Part of the Jonathan Nunn specialist tool range, the Jonathan Nunn Forging Hammer (available in 2 sizes) is available from Jim Blurton online shop.

The Jonathan Nunn Forging Hammer 2lb/ 2.3lb is available from £165.00 ex VAT and is available worldwide through the online shop.  Alternatively, find your nearest stockist here.

Stevie Fisher Charity Workshop

On 11th November 2016, Jim Blurton, a world leading farrier and designer of horseshoes and specialist tools, will be running a specialist farrier clinic. The clinic was auctioned off in aid of the Steve Fisher Charity.

The Steve Fisher Charity was set up to raise vital funds for Stevie Fisher, a fellow farrier, who in August 2014 suffered a brain stem stroke, followed by a lung infection leading to pneumonia.

Following a testing few weeks where Stevie was put in a coma to allow his lungs to recover, he was brought round, however he now faced the new challenge. Stevie now suffers from locked in syndrome; his brain function being fine, but having no movement other than blinking.

Before suffering a stroke, Stevie was in the process of completing the Worshipful Company of Farriers probationary judging; on his way to becoming a judge of Farrier competitions, so a competition was set up in his own name – held in August 2015.

In addition to the competition, other events to raise funds to support Stevie in his rehabilitation were held including auctioning workshops led by Jim and a number of other farriers.

Jim has been supporting the Stevie Fisher Charity since launch, and he will now be providing a farrier master class to the auction winners, each paying £300 for the opportunity, and receiving an education, whilst supporting a cause close to Jim’s heart.

If you would like to know more about the Stevie Fisher Competition find out more here.

On 28th/ 29th November 2016, Jim will be leading a specialist clinic in Norway, focusing on the heart bar shoe, the exclusive design developed by Jim and his team for the treatment of such conditions as laminitis and flat foot.

The clinic will focus on ‘when and how to fit heart bar shoes’ with Jim providing a masterclass in how to make the most of the shoe design and tools.

This legacy work continues now that Jim is back in the UK, with on-going educational development for farriers and animal care professionals to take part in future Olympics.

A third generation farrier, Jim has been competing in international farrier competitions for over 40 years, winning the world championships in 2005.

Jim was initially classed as the wildcard entering the competition (as Jim hadn’t entered competitions for some years), however over 40 apprentices have trained under Jim and his team, with some going on to international competition. Consequently the team’s success at the next event shouldn’t be underestimated.

The Four Man Team included Andy Reider-Smith, Gavin Galby, Duncan Thomson and Jim, with each farrier having to prepare a hoof, make a shoe and fit it, with points awarded for the best prepared hoof and shoe.

In addition to winning the team competition, team members also placed individually in the Open Pony Shoeing (Gavin), Open Cob Shoeing (Duncan and Gavin) and Open Hunter Shoeing (Duncan) - view the results here.

Ahead of the show, Head of Shows Alan Lyons highlighted the level of expertise shown by the competitors and the preparation each team would make, really showcasing the achievement of winning the prestigious competition.

“It may sound relatively simple but it takes years of training and experience to become a top farrier,” Mr Lyons said.

“There is an old country saying that still holds true today: No foot, no horse — and the key to a sound horse is still a good farrier.”

“They will be given a pattern for the required shoe and will practise for hours to make sure they get it right on the day.”

Jim is now ready planning his next competition showing off the team’s expertise at the Yorkshire Farriers Education & Demonstration Association (YFEDA) World Team Championship, held at Countryside Live at the Great Yorkshire Show taking place on 21st – 23rd October.
